The first main arc in Project .Hack
Plot
This is "The World", a MMORPG published and maintained by the CyberConnect Corporation, known as the CC Corporation. Players interact with The World using Virtual reality headsets called FMDs (Face-mounted display) and controllers. Hundreds of people all over the world access this Internet game and can interact, fight in dungeons, collect rare items, basically play the game however they want to play it.
One day, a ‘Wavemaster’ called Tsukasa wakes up in a dungeon, with no recollection of how he got there. Not only that, Tsukasa discovers he can feel real pain if he is hurt, can smell things inside the game, and is not in front of a control terminal.
In fact, Tsukasa can’t even log out of the game. His mind has been trapped inside the system.
Over view
.Hack//Sign is either one of those anime you’ll fall in love with, or won’t. Despite visual appearances of being a RPG action adventure, this is in fact one of the biggest character driven stories you’ll ever have the pleasure of picking up. The anime is very dialog heavy, with hardly any fight scenes.
The main themes of the anime is human isolation and how this effects the human mind.
Tsukasa had been physically abused and neglected in his childhood, and his state of mind rapidly degrees once he is trapped inside the game. A turning point in the anime is when Tsukasa actually starts to smile and interact better with others, before Morganna viciously tortures him and we get to see just how far a human can suffer.
I personally felt this anime deserves much praise. If you are planning to watch it, I strongly suggest people with mature minds to watch it. Otherwise you’ll probably end up thinking its crap. It’s basically talking throughout the whole series, which I know will put people right off.
If you’re all ready think ‘oh geez yawn’ I shall now directed you to .Hack//Legend of the Twilight.
...
Still with me? Good.
This is an anime where you get something out of it, and are not just watching for fun.
Characters
Tsukasa
A gender confused Wavemaster. The protagonist of the story. His consciousness becomes trapped in the The World, while his real body is in a coma. He plays The World as a means of escape from an abusive single father; as a result, Tsukasa is chosen by Morganna to prevent Aura from awakening by corrupting her with his negative emotions. Though he is distant at first, Tsukasa eventually connects with Mimiru, Subaru, and Bear.
Mimiru
A female HeavyBlade. She meets Tsukasa and soon becomes one of the few he trusts and he eventually sees her as a friend. She also teams up with Bear, who she refers to as an "old man", and spends considerable time in the series attempting to figure out what Bear's career is in real life. Mimiru is very cheerful and bubbly and swears to protect Tsukasa
Bear
A male Blademaster. He uses The World to relax, having played computer games for over thirty years, and he likes to help out new players. He enjoys interacting with Mimiru and BT, having met the latter in person. Bear is greatly interested in Tsukasa and acts as a father, or big brother to him and most of the characters throughout the series. Later he becomes Tsukasa’s guardian
Subaru
A female Heavyaxe. She first joins The World hoping to meet people, though she knows nothing of the game and just wanders around for hours. She eventually meets Crim, who teaches her to stand up against other players, and the two form an unofficial player organization designed to bring order, the Crimsion Knights.
Aura
Female AI. Tsukasa watches over her sleeping form in a small glade with a bed and teddy bear. Aura’s skin dyes almost black as Tsukasa continues to have negative thoughts and will only get better if Tsukasa starts to think positively. The antagonist Morugana does not want Aura to wake up
Morugana
Female AI. Main antagonist. Only depicted as a bodiless voice, she uses Tsukasa bad emotions to try and kill off Aura
